The influence of octanol, hexadecanol, lauric acid, and the cationic s
urfactant cylacetyl-N,N-dimethyl-N-isobutanoyl-ethylammonium bromide o
n the behavior of the surface-active monomer ylacetyl-N,N-dimethyl-N-m
ethacryloylethyl-ammonium bromide in a monolayer of it at a water-gas
interface was investigated at 293 K. It was suggested that when octano
l or lauric acid is introduced into a monolayer of the monomer, phase-
separated monolayers are formed, but when hexadecanol or the cationic
surfactant is introduced, homogeneous monolayers are formed. This hypo
thesis is confirmed by an investigation of the kinetics of the radical
polymerization of the monomer in mixed monolayers of it.
