From aluminum sec-butoxide, highly dispersed aluminum hydroxide AlOOH
(pseudoboehmite) has been prepared; this material is peptized in an ac
idic medium to form stable sols. The composition, structure, and therm
al behavior of this material have been investigated. The pseudoboehmit
e consists of fairly isometric crystallites with dimensions smaller th
an 100 Angstrom, separated by water interlayers that favor the peptiza
tion of the pseudoboehmite in an acidic medium. Peptization and subseq
uent drying of the sol do not affect the integrity or internal structu
re of the primary crystallites of the pseudoboehmite.
