An experimental investigation was made of the conditions for the gener
ation of ultrashort pulses in a dye laser with light-induced distribut
ed feedback. Experiments involving excitation of this laser with singl
e-frequency and multifrequency radiation in the form of the second har
monic of an YAG:Nd3+ laser showed that in an these cases the ultrashor
t pulses were generated in the distributed-feedback laser by excitatio
n of relaxation oscillations of the level populations and self-Q switc
hing of the laser caused by such excitation.
