A. Yamashita et al., BIOMECHANICAL MOTION ANALYSIS AND CLASSIF ICATION BY TYPE DIAGRAM OF JAPANESE PLANING MOTION, Mokuzai Gakkaishi, 39(9), 1993, pp. 1012-1019
We have developed type diagrams based on five major elements of the Ja
panese planing motion. One purpose of a type diagram is to analyticall
y compare the planing motion of skilled and unskilled woodworkers and
to present the results graphically. The second purpose of a type diagr
am is to analyze the planing motion of unskilled woodworkers and to cl
assify them into groups. The five major elements composing the type di
agram are as follows: (1) The position of the knife in relation to the
far end of the materal. (2) The standing position of the subject. (3)
The magnitude of the pulling force and the downward pushing force. (4
) The total horizontal waist movement of the subject. (5) The position
of the knife in relation to the near end of the material. Furthermore
, each major element-is subclassified into several variations. Using t
he type diagram, we were able to easily and logically classify the Jap
anese planing motion.
