Abstract
The Cattle Oiler site, 39ST224, in the Big Bend Reservoir Area of Sout h Dakota, contains initial and Extended components of the Middle Misso uri tradition as well as a component of the Extended Coalescent varian t. Exotic artifacts, i.e., specimens whose provenances are outside the Missouri River basin in South Dakota, are described and evaluated. Th e Initial Middle Missouri component contains artifacts originating fro m distant locales, the Extended Middle Missouri component contains mat erials imported from lesser distances, e.g., catlinite. The Initial Mi ddle Missouri was within, but at the edge of, Mississippian trade nets , Extended Middle Missouri was beyond those limits.
