Abstract
This article compares maternal and child health and immunisation servi ces in two poor rural counties in China. The health status of the popu lation of one county is much better than in the other. This is partly due to differences in the preventive programmes, The authors identify a number oi factors that have made the preventive services stronger in one of the counties. Thee conclude with a number of policy recommenda tions.
