Flow birefringence, equilibrium and nonequilibrium electric birefringe
nce in solutions of cellulose carbanilate (CC) in dioxane and ethyl ac
etate were studied over a wide range of molecular masses. The values o
f optical anisotropy DELTAa of the monomer unit of cellulose carbanila
te in dioxane and in ethyl acetate were found to be -40 x 10(-25) cm3
and -18 x 10(-25) cm3, respectively. From the measurements of nonequil
ibrium electric birefringence of low-molecular-mass fractions in a dio
xane solution of cellulose carbanilate, we estimated the length of the
Kuhn statistical segment A to be (250 +/- 50) x 10(-8) cm. Calculatio
ns based on the dependence of the Kerr constant on the chain length ga
ve, for the length of the Kuhn statistical segment of cellulose carban
ilate in dioxane solution, the value of (225 +/- 25) x 10(-8) cm. It w
as shown that the contribution of the transverse component of the dipo
le moment of the monomer unit in electric birefringence is small. The
values of longitudinal components of dipole moments of cellulose carba
nilate monomer unit in dioxane and ethyl acetate solutions were found
to be 0.91 and 1.3 D, respectively. The results obtained suggest that
there is a correlation between the orientations of the polar bonds of
the polymer chain and orientations of dipole moments of ethyl acetate
molecules.
