The percentage of women in the labour force in many parts of the world
, and the proportion of managers who are female has increased, especia
lly in North America. Women have not, however, made it to the top in g
overnments or corporations. The current status of women in management
can be explained in part by the types of 'solutions' that have been im
plemented to increase women's opportunities in management. Proposed so
lutions depend on one's explanation for the problem. Four explanations
for women's employment status and solutions consistent with each expl
anation are presented. Implementation of the more feasible but less fa
r-reaching change strategies may help explain the current status of wo
men in management.
