This exploratory, ethnographic study examined the effects of changing
work-place and domestic conditions on women managers' roles. Interview
s were carried out with 19 female and 4 male managers in the People's
Republic of China. The research focused on the impact of recent econom
ic reforms, increases in women's education and training, and their gre
ater access to female support networks. In addition, the consequences
of changing marriage and family patterns and the one-child family poli
cy were examined. Many of the sweeping social and economic changes tha
t have been taking place in China have furthered the advancement of ma
nagerial women. However, there are still many obstacles to equality be
tween women and men in both the occupational and the domestic spheres.
