Abstract
In the case of the formation of positive ions in neutral H-2 or D2 mol ecule-surface collisions van Slooten et al. have found that the degree of dissociation scales with the total energy times the total scatteri ng angle squared. This points to the importance of dissociation induce d by a collision with a single substrate atom. In this work we will de monstrate the importance of the initial orientation for the degree of dissociation, as obtained from classical trajectory studies. The impac t parameter dependence of the scattering process is also discussed. A mistake in our earlier paper is corrected.
