The problem of plane arbitrarily stratified flow of finite thickness a
round a body is considered in the linearized formulation. A theorem of
Tikhonov and Samarskii [1] on the uniqueness of the solution of the e
xternal Dirichlet problem for the Helmholtz equation in the plane case
is extended to asymmetrical radiation conditions and this is used to
investigate the nature of the non-uniqueness of the solution of the li
nearized problem of the flow around the body. The existence of a solut
ion is investigated by potential-theory methods. The ''dipole approxim
ations'' of the solution of the flow problem when the radiation coeffi
cient approaches zero are proved.
