Abstract
Incorporation of late transition elements in gallium intermetallic pha ses allows structural modelling of cluster frameworks. Li68Znl6Ga133 c rystallizes in the trigonal space group P $($) over bar$$ 31c (n degre es 163) with cell parameters (hexagonal axes) a = b = 13.657(3) and c = 23.435(5)Angstrom. The structure contains Samson polyhedra (extended icosahedral unit with 104 atoms) but contrary to the copper intermeta llic phase Li13Cu6Ga21 with body-centered cubic packing, these polyhed ra adopt a pillar stacking along the c-axis of the hexagonal cell. Zin c and gallium are not distinguished crystallographically. Coordination as well as atomic bonding and electronic requirements are discussed.
