Abstract
A novel absolute position optical encoder using two, pseudorandom and periodic, synchronously engraved tracks on a glass slab is presented. The encoded track is read with a GRIN lens and a linear CCD array toge ther with the appropriate signal processing. The spatial coupling of b oth tracks gives submicrometre resolution when the periodic track is r ead with the standard Moire technique.
