Oi. Miller et al., INHALED NITRIC-OXIDE FOR PULMONARY-HYPERTENSION AFTER REPAIR OF EXOMPHALOS, Archives of Disease in Childhood, 69(5), 1993, pp. 518-520
Inhaled nitric oxide was used successfully to treat a newborn infant w
ith severe pulmonary hypertension complicating repair of congenital ex
omphalos. The infant had failed conventional treatment and extracorpor
eal membrane oxygenation was unsuitable because of the risk of bleedin
g from the recent laparotomy. Extended treatment with inhaled nitric o
xide appears safe and may offer an alternative to mechanical life supp
ort in severe cases of neonatal pulmonary hypertension.
