Abstract
Plant species play an important role within the german environmental s pecimen banking (ESB) program. Their function and the criteria for the selection of species is explained, the sampling strategy and developm ent of sampling guidelines (standard operation procedures, SOPs) are d emonstrated with examples. Possibilities and problems of soil as a mat rix type as well as an important means of site characterization for en vironmental specimen banking is discussed.
