Abstract
The promise of increased differentiation in local television news prod uced by new technologies in a multichannel environment prompted this s tudy. After comparing 1,335 stories from nine TV stations in Texas, th e data showed that 56% of the reports on local newscasts were similar (consonant) and 44% were different (unique). News stories from network sources presented the highest percentage of similarity, while unique stories were usually supplied by local sources.
