Abstract
In the present work the low temperature polarized absorption spectra t ogether with photoluminescence studies of the (4)I(15/2)reversible arr ow(4)S(3/2) transitions of Er3+ ions in LiNbO3 crystals are presented. The effect of MgO codoping on the lattice location of Er3+ ions and t he optical properties are discussed.
