Amorphous TbFeCo films have been manufactured with a rotating substrat
e, multi-target, dc magnetron cosputtering process. The light rare ear
th praseodymium (Pr) has been doped into these TbFeCo alloys in an att
empt to increase the intrinsic polar Kerr rotation. Magneto-optical me
asurements however, indicate a degradation of the Kerr rotation with P
r content in the new alloys. The deterioration of the magnetic propert
ies, the coercivity, the squareness of the hysteresis loop shape and t
he perpendicular anisotropy are also shown to be a result of Pr substi
tution.
