Abstract
In 1916, the Ottawa Improvement Commission, now the National Capital C ommission, installed a concrete lamp-post to provide electric lighting along the Federal Driveway as part of its mandate to landscape and ma intain parks and parkways in the capital. The design is highly signifi cant both for its innovative use of materials and for its visual impac t on the landscape. The lamp-post today is a heritage landmark, repres entative of urban reform introduced in the early 20th century under th e influence of the City Beautiful movement.
