The statistical photoclinometric shadow method is applied to table act
ivity measurement on the Fourdrinier wire section of a paper machine.
The imaging system consists of a CCD video camera and a stroboscope th
at illuminates the wire and freezes its motion. images are grabbed and
fed directly to a PC for subsequent processing. In addition to the ph
otoclinometric method, the instrumentational and computational methods
are also described. Special attention is paid to the computational an
d experimental testing. The method is shown to perform well under typi
cal operating conditions of a Fourdrinier wire section, and has a grea
t potential for use in the paper industry, because it allows measureme
nts on a production machine without disturbing production.
