Lipophosphoglycan (LPG), the major cell-surface glycoconjugate of Leis
hmania promastigotes, is an essential virulence determinant. One featu
re of LPG resides in its strong inhibitory effect on the activity of p
urified protein kinase C (PKC). In this article, Albert Descoteaux and
Salvatore Turco briefly review the evidence that LPG effectively inhi
bits PKC activity in the macrophage, and discuss the implication of su
ch inhibition on Leishmania intramacrophage survival.
