Abstract
Reaction and densification during reaction sintering of mullite (3Al2O 3.2SiO2) and aluminium titanate (beta-Al2TiO5) ceramics were studied u sing either a conventional, 3 kW electric furnace or a 1.2 kW, 2.45 GH z microwave furnace. Two tests were developed to calibrate temperature measurement in the microwave furnace. An analysis map of samples trea ted by microwaves showed that they had been subjected to thermal gradi ents during their reaction-sintering stage. The decrease in sintering temperature associated with the use of microwave, if any, does not exc eed 50-degrees-C.
