Abstract
Scanning tunneling microscopy was used to investigate the origin of a large-scale periodicity observed on the basal plane of highly ordered pyrolytic graphite. Similar phenomena have previously been ascribed to a rotational misorientation between the uppermost graphite layers. We report the first direct measurement of graphite interlayer rotational alignment in the presence of a superlattice, and find that misorienta tion is not the cause.
