1. The possible effects of the inclusion of 'tourist' species have bee
n the cause of some concern in investigations of interspecific relatio
nships between abundance and body size. 2. Data for adult beetles (Col
eoptera) from oak trees in Britain are used to investigate the relatio
nship of abundance to body size when tourists are and are not included
. 3. For this particular assemblage, tourists do not fundamentally alt
er the basic statistics of the relationship between abundance and body
size. However, they are not a random sample of the beetle assemblage.
They have lower abundances and are also of smaller body size than oth
er species.
