A prospective, randomised and double blind comparative study of Midazo
lam/Tramadol or placebo/Tramadol for premedication before PTA was carr
ied out on 40 patients (12 female and 28 male, average age 66.1 +/- 12
). The anxiolytic, analgesic and general findings were quantified by m
eans of a visual analogue score. Pre- and peri-interventional blood ga
s, blood pressure and pulse rates were determined. The complications o
f the two schemes were compared. 19 patients received Midazolam/Tramad
ol and 21 placebo/Tramadol. Patient anxiety was reduced significantly
from 2 5.8 +/- 2 5 to 4.3 +/- 6 by premedication. Significant increase
in the pain score during PTA was observed only in the placebo group (
4.3 +/- 12.6 to 27.4 +/- 20.9). There was no difference in the inciden
ce of complications and respiratory depression due to the Midazolam/Tr
amadol combination was not observed.
