Very high molecular weight poly(vinylamine) was prepared by a modified
Hofmann rearrangement of poly(acrylamide). The reaction was carried o
ut in ethylene glycol using the monosodium salt of this solvent and br
omine instead of sodium hypohalogenides in the original Hofmann rearra
ngement. Poly(vinyl 2-hydroxyethylurethane) was formed as an intermedi
ate product. Hydrolysis of the latter gave poly(vinylamine) with quant
itative conversions.
