Va. Mhaisalker et al., DYNAMIC-PROGRAMMING OPTIMIZATION OF WATER-TREATMENT-PLANT DESIGN, Journal of environmental engineering, 119(6), 1993, pp. 1158-1175
A mathematical model incorporating the performance relationships and c
ost functions for the component units of a conventional water-treatmen
t system (viz rapid mix, clariflocculator, and rapid sand filters) was
developed. An algorithm using dynamic programming is described for fu
nctional and minimal-cost design of the system. An analysis of the sta
bility of optimal design and its sensitivity with respect to some syst
em parameters (viz input characteristics, interest rate and constructi
on and power costs) is also incorporated specifically with respect to
a case study.
