Abstract
Column and thin-layer chromatography revealed the presence of the foll owing carotenoids in the thalli of 19 lichen species from West Greenla nd: epsilon-carotene, alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthi n, lutein, 3'-epilutein, zeaxanthin, lutein epoxide, antheraxanthin, c anthaxanthin, astaxanthin, violaxanthin, mutatoxanthin, auroxanthin, n eoxanthin, and capsochrome. The total content of carotenoids ranged fr om 13.13 (Cetraria nivalis) to 88.67 mu g g(-1) dry wt (Xanthoria sore diata).
