A novel mixed-valence, quasi-two-dimensional bismuth calcium titanium(
III/IV) sulfide is reported, i.e., Bi6-xCa.Ti5S16 (X = 3.08). The titl
e compound represents the first example of a commensurate structure in
the class of misfit-layer compounds. The structural framework is buil
t from mixed NaCl/CdI2 type slabs of (Bi,Ca) S and TiS2, respectively,
stacking alternately along the crystallographic c-axis. The electrica
l resistivity measurement on a pressed pellet sample shows a metallic
behavior with a resistivity of 4.96 muOMEGA.m at 300 K.
