The extraction behaviour of Am(III) and Eu(III) from nitrate aqueous m
edium by thenoyltrifluoroacetone (HTTA) and its mixture with triphenyl
arsine oxide(Ph3AsO) in chloroform has been investigated. The addition
of Ph3AsO was found to enhance the extraction of both cations. With H
TTA alone, the stoichiometry of the extracted species was found to be
M(OH)2-TTA(HTTA)2, where M=Eu(III) or Am(III). With HTTA-Ph3AsO mixtur
e, the extracted species were Eu(NO3)2TTA-(HTTA)2Ph3AsO and Am(OH)(TTA
)2HTTAPh3AsO for Eu(III) and Am(III), respectively. The different para
meters affecting the separation of these two radionuclides are given a
nd discussed.
