A specialized region of the endoplasmic reticulum-the BFA body-is defi
ned by the site of accumulation of coatomer when nonclathrin coat prot
ein (COP)-coated vesicle assembly is prevented by the drug brefeldin A
(BFA). BFA bodies are formed by part smooth, part rough domains of en
doplasmic reticulum that are cis to the classical transitional endopla
smic reticulum and to BFA-induced Golgi remnants.
