Abstract
New identifications of similar to 2200 Fe I lines between 1700 Angstro m and 5 mu m (59 000 cm(-1) -2000 cm(-1)) due to highly-excited config urations are presented. These have been observed in hollow cathode lam ps using Fourier transform and grating spectroscopy. About 1700 of the lines have been observed in the solar spectrum. A companion paper pre sents the experimental energy levels.
