New oscillator strengths have been calculated for an Delta n less than
or equal to 2 allowed transitions of astrophysical interest in S I. C
onfiguration interaction (CI) and the most important relativistic effe
cts were taken into account in the computations performed with the hel
p of two independent theoretical methods, HFR and SST, whose accuracy
is compared in detail. The solar abundance of sulphur established on t
he basis of the present oscillator strengths is found to be A(S) = 7.3
3+/-0.04 in the usual logarithmic scale. This new value is somewhat la
rger than the result obtained from f values estimated with the Coulomb
approximation (CA) but is in good agreement with the meteoritic abund
ance.
