Abstract
Using X-ray diffraction and Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy we have inves tigated recent claims that intermetallics of nominal 1-12 composition YFe12-xGax (1 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 2) form wi th the tetragonal ThMn12 structure. Contrary to earlier reports, we ha ve only observed the formation of either the hexagonal Th2Ni17 or rhom bohedral Th2Zn17 structures plus alpha-Fe(Ga).
