T. Yanagi et K. Horiike, GROUP PARTITIONING OF SIMULATED HLLW COMPONENTS WITH USE OF IRON FERRITE ADDITIVE, Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 30(10), 1993, pp. 1010-1016
Iron ferrite particles prepared by the wet method was applied for part
itioning cations of a simulated high level liquid waste into four grou
ps by means of magnetic filtration. The sample solution prepared by sl
ight denitration with formic acid of 2.5M nitric acid solution contain
ing more than 25 metallic ions to the pH of about 0.8 was used after c
entrifugation to remove precipitates of Zr, Mo and Te ions. The separa
tion of ions into each group was basically carried out by producing pr
ecipitates such as hydroxides or carbonates in presence of ferrite par
ticles at a pH controlled with ammonium hydroxide, retaining in the ma
gnetic separation column as a mixture with ferrite particles, and re-d
issolving only precipitates trapped in the column with 0.1M nitric aci
d under keeping the magnetic field. The ferrite particles left in the
column were also recovered for reuse by rinsing with diluted nitric ac
id after switching off the field. The obtained results revealed that t
he iron ferrite additive worked well on recovering the precipitates fr
om the solution with the aid of a moderate magnetic field and enables
the process consisting of four steps to partition the simulant ions in
to four groups.
