cis-[CrCl(OH)(bpy)2]+ ion undergoes a slow OH--catalyzed substitution
of Cl- ligand in alkaline media. The substitution is stereoretentive,
only cis-[Cr(bpy)2(H2O)2]3+ cation was identified as the reaction prod
uct after acidification of the mixture. Kinetics of the base hydrolysi
s has been studied spectrophotometrically. The rate law and the activa
tion parameters have been determined. Mechanism of the reaction is dis
cussed.
