The following methods may be used in paper mills which process almost
clean waste paper or none at all. The remainder materials carried by t
heir waste water may be treated by a combination of various separating
methods, so that most of these materials can be fed back into the pro
cess. Some of these separating methods are also being applied in waste
paper and pigment preparation. In many mills the possibilities of red
ucing the quantity of the accrueing remainder materials by in-mill mea
sures are not completely exhausted. Activities should firstly be direc
ted towards such measures. In a prototype plant it was possible to red
uce the quantity of remainder materials by 80% and over. The cost savi
ngs compared to dumping or incineration produce a payback of the separ
ation plant within two to five years.
