Abstract
Two-photon ionization was applied to the sensitive detection of aromat
ic molecules and dyes on a metal surface in ambient air by using the t
hird harmonic of an Nd: YAG laser. The better quality of the Nd:YAG la
ser beam compared with a nitrogen laser improved the sensitivity. The
detection limits were of the order of 10(-3) monolayer coverage. The d
ependence of the ionization signal on the molar absorptivity and the m
etal substrate was measured.
