A survey of 22 Christchurch area secondary schools was carried out to
obtain a clearer picture of the present roles of guidance personnel an
d to identify developments in those roles since the mid-1980s. Results
indicated that counselling is seen as a needed and valued activity in
most schools and that counsellors' roles and responsibilities have be
come more clearly defined. There were suggestions, however, that those
responsibilities were spread too widely and overlapped considerably w
ith other guidance personnel. The need for schools to rationalise the
roles of guidance staff was noted.
