Polymeric capillary tubing has been used to concentrate polycyclic aro
matic hydrocarbons (PAH) initially present in spiked water samples at
the part per million level. An aqueous sample containing PAH is pumped
through uncoated capillary tubing and PAH are adsorbed on the inner s
urface of the tubing. The PAH are then desorbed using a small quantity
of organic solvent. Ethyl vinyl acetate and polyethylene capillary tu
bing materials, the effect of temperature on adsorption and the nature
of the organic solvent for desorption were studied.
