Abstract
The influence of mating genes on the vegetative incompatibility was an alysed in different groups of fungi. The hypothesis of evolution and t he ecological role of incompatibility is discussed. It is supposed tha t the amphiginic antheridium in heterothallic Phytophthora species is a structure which protects the mating strains from the vegetative inco mpatibility.
