A two-dimensional transient model for the removal of metal using a hig
h power laser is developed. The nondimensional forms of the governing
equation and the boundary conditions are derived and the numerical sol
ution is obtained by using a finite element method. This finite elemen
t model is used to study the performance of material removing process
for a wide range of parameters. The performance characteristics and th
e effects of these parameters on the shape and size of the groove form
ed are discussed.
