We have examined the surface ultrastructure and morphological characte
ristics of leucocytes obtained from control rats breathing air and rat
s made acutely hypoxic (breathing 6% O2, for 30 min). Striking ultrast
ructural and morphological changes occurred in the leucocytes of hypox
ic rats. These changes included die appearance of crater-like holes, a
reduction in granule size and disruption of the cell membrane. The im
plications of these findings are discussed.
