Abstract
This paper considers an inverse problem for a first-order equation; th e determination of the coefficient lambda(a) in rhot + rhoa + lambdarh o = 0. A particular application is the recovery of a death rate in an age-structured population model. In addition to the usual birth renewa l process, census data on the population (namely, the values of rho(a, t) at two different times) is prescribed. Conditions on the data are given that lead to a unique solution and algorithms for the reconstruc tion of the coefficient are developed.
