A map describing the crater-wear characteristics of uncoated high-spee
d steel (HSS) cutting tools during dry turning operations is presented
. Combining this with an earlier map for flank-wear characteristics, a
n overall wear damage map for uncoated HSS tools during turning operat
ions is proposed. In this diagram, there exists a region where machini
ng conditions are such that the overall wear damage to the HSS tool is
at a minimum. The implications of this diagram are then discussed in
the context of practical machining operations.
