Abstract
Stilbene-degrading microorganisms were isolated from natural environme nts by enrichment cultures on stilbene as the sole carbon source. All of the 27 strains isolated belonged to the genus Pseudomonas, which we re classified into three groups according to biochemical characteristi cs. During growth of the isolates the decrease of stilbene was accompa nied with the appearance of several hydroxyphenyl carboxylic acids inc luding protocatechuic acid and benzoic acid.
