A. Drouet et J. Valance, HYPOTHYROID HYPERTROPHIC MYOPATHY OR HOFF MANN SYNDROME AS A COMPLICATION OF CHRONIC LYMPHOCYTIC THYROIDITIS - A CASE-REPORT, La Revue de medecine interne, 14(9), 1993, pp. 864-868
The authors report a case of hypothyroid hypertrophic myopathy which r
eveal chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. This entity est uncommon, can b
e the most important sign of hypothyroidism and cure after the institu
tion of thyroid hormone replacement therapy. The E. M. G. is usually m
yopathic and serum muscle markers (myoglobin and enzymes) increased. P
athologic studies of muscle show caracteritic but non specific and inc
onstant abnormalities. Hypothyroid myopathy could be caused by a mitoc
hondrial oxidative phosphorylation deficiency or changes in muscle con
tractile properties (both in fibre type proportion and in the properti
es of the muscle contractile proteins).
