Abstract
A brief review is presented of the development of work carried out mai nly by Derjaguin and co-workers since the end of the 1940s concerning electrophysical phenomena accompanying the rupture of the adhesive bon d and the failure of solids under mechanical loads (e.g. the electrica l charging of fresh surfaces and gas discharge processes due to the ex cess charges, and the emission of electrons and X-rays, as well as col d nuclear fusion). A correlation between the electron emission phenome non and mechano-chemical processes in solids is noted.
