The relationship between the temperature distribution in a cooled mirr
or and the thermal deformations of the reflecting surface is analyzed
for stationary and transient conditions. The importance of considering
and properly controlling the temperature distribution inside the mirr
or is demonstrated. Results of comparative calculations of the deforma
tions of mirrors of various materials are presented, as well as experi
mental data on the thermal self-compensation of cooled mirrors.
