Assessed 60 mother-child pairs on two measures of crystallized intelli
gence and one measure of fluid abilities. Maternal fluid and crystalli
zed intelligence and education, as well as family income and home envi
ronment, were used to predict Caucasian and African-American preschool
children's fluid and crystallized abilities. Mothers' fluid abilities
best predicted children's fluid abilities; mothers' crystallized inte
lligence best predicted children's crystallized intelligence; when exa
mined without maternal intelligence, the only socioeconomic variables
that significantly predicted children's intellectual abilities were fa
mily income and home environment.
